• Structure of the course: This course is scheduled for four hours each week. Three of these hours, (on M W F) will consist of lectures in Math Annex 1100. Every second week you will also participate in a fourth hour, which consists of a computer lab dedicated to the course. On weeks that you do not have a lab hour, you may use this hour as free time.

• Labs :

• Computer Labs: The labs require no prior knowlege of computers, no programming experience, and no special familiarity with software. All neccessary skills will be taught to you in the introductory labs. The purpose of these labs is to allow you to explore the mathematical material in ways that are not available through lecture hours and self-study. Once every 2 weeks you will go to a designated computer lab for a TA-guided lab hour. You may use other times, subject to availability of the lab, to do further computer lab investigations on your own. A more detailed lab schedule will be distributed during the first two weeks of class. The labs will be graded (see grade distribution) and are an integral part of the course. It has been our experience that students who spend time on the labs easily earn credit towards their final grade.

• Lab submissions: You are responsible for submitting your lab work before the due date. Submissions are guaranteed to work from within one of the Math labs. We cannot make this guarantee for those submitting work from another location. Also, this term we are not accepting e-mail submissions of work. If you are working remotely and cannot submit your work, you should submit it from one of the Math labs.

• Computer accounts will be assigned to you during the first two weeks of classes and will expire at the end of the term.

• Text: There is no required text for these sections. The course material is all found on the web and available to you at http://gamba.math.ubc.ca/coursedoc/math101/. However, if you prefer to have a textbook for your own use, you may purchase the one offered by the bookstore for Math 101.

• Homework: problems will be assigned every Friday, and will be collected one week later. Solutions will be distributed on the Monday class following the due date.

• Grading Scheme: Computer labs: 10%, Homework : 10%, Midterms (2) : 15% each; Final Exam: 50%.

• Midterms: The dates of the two midterm tests are: Wednesday Febuary 10, 1999, and Wednesday March 24, 1998.
